Cashless Claim Approval
Insurer must approve/deny cashless pre-authorization within 1 hour of receiving request from network hospital.
Hospital Discharge
Insurer must process discharge authorization within 3 hours of receiving final bills from hospital.
Claim Settlement Timeline
All insurance claims must be settled within 30 days of receiving all required documents.
PED Waiting Period
Maximum Pre-Existing Disease (PED) waiting period is 48 months. IRDAI mandates coverage after this period.
Lifetime Renewability
All health insurance policies must offer lifetime renewability. Insurer cannot refuse renewal.
Portability
Policyholders can switch insurers without losing accumulated waiting period credits. IRDAI portability rules apply.
8-Year Moratorium
After 8 continuous years of coverage, insurer cannot contest claims except in cases of proven fraud.
GST on Insurance
Health insurance: 0% GST (from Sept 2025). Life insurance: 0% GST (from Sept 2025). Motor: 18% GST. Travel: 18% GST. Home: 18% GST.
